Making Moving A Little Less Stressful
Moving is stressful, but it doesn't have to be. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of packing up your belongings and transporting them across town or across the country, there are a few steps you can take to make the process less overwhelming—and even a little fun. Here are some tips for taking the stress out of moving:
Make a Plan and Stick to It
You can make moving easier by planning ahead. The more you know about what you need to move, the more efficiently you can plan everything out.
The first thing to do when making a plan is to figure out how much time you have before your move date. If there are other moves that need to happen around the same time as yours, be sure not to schedule them on top of each other!
Next, take an inventory of all of your belongings and divide them into categories: furniture and appliances; clothing; small items like kitchen utensils and books; large items like TVs or heavy pieces of furniture; etcetera. This will help clarify which items need special attention like packing supplies or labeling (or both).
Sort Your Items Room by Room
Sort your items room by room.
Set aside items you want to keep, such as sentimental pieces and important documents (birth certificates, passports, medical records), then pack them in an easy-to-access place like a dresser drawer or trunk at the end of your bed.
Give away or toss anything that’s broken or which you don’t need anymore; this includes things like old clothes and shoes that no longer fit comfortably but are still hanging around taking up space in your closet (or just making you feel bad). If it doesn't bring joy when you see it or use it—and if there's no real sentimental value attached—donate these things! You can also sell them online through sites like Craigslist, eBay or Facebook Marketplace if they're still worth something monetarily speaking (which could come in handy during this transition period).
Repair broken furniture as much as possible before packing them into boxes so they won't be damaged further by being moved again later on down the line once they arrive at their new home(s).
Do a Little Bit Every Day
The first step is to make a plan. Don't worry about the big picture yet, just focus on the small steps you will need to take. If you start small and keep going, it will be easier than trying to do it all at once—and it's easier to get started if you do a little bit every day.
If you're finding it hard to stay motivated, try setting yourself some goals that are achievable in smaller chunks. For example: “I'll go buy more boxes tomorrow morning," or "I'll clean out my kitchen cupboards this weekend." This way, when things get stressful and overwhelming later on (and they will), these bite-sized tasks will give a much-needed boost of energy as well as help keep everything organized!
Declutter
Get rid of items you don’t need.
Don't save items that are broken or damaged.
Don't save items that are outdated or no longer useful.
Don't save items that are sentimental but not useful.
Don't save items that you don't have room for in your new home/apartment/house/condo unit, etc..
Pack in Small Bites
Now that you’ve got a plan, it’s time to get started. The best way to approach packing is in small bites. Don't try to do everything at once. Instead, take a break and come back another day when the box is empty or nearly empty before starting again with another one.
You can also use this advice when it comes time for unpacking as well! You don't want your stuff scattered everywhere, so set aside an hour each day when most of your boxes will be ready for unloading, and then you can easily unpack them without worrying about clutter everywhere.
The last thing we want is stress getting in the way of moving on! If there are things that make you upset or angry—perhaps some old relationship issues? Or maybe just something silly like not being able to find matching socks for five months straight?—it might be helpful if you could put those away somewhere until after the move is complete. Then they won't weigh down your energy while trying move everything else around!
Label Everything
Label everything.
Even if you're not moving far, labeling your possessions is still a good idea. You'll find it much easier to keep track of things when they're all labeled neatly and clearly. If you're moving far away from home, this will be especially important since the labels can help you identify where something should go in new surroundings.
Label boxes with their contents and tape them shut so they don't get lost in transit or transported somewhere else by mistake! If there are items that need to be stored elsewhere after moving (say, seasonal decorations or clothes), label those too so nothing gets forgotten or thrown away by mistake!
Don't let clutter slow you down
Make an inventory of all your belongings.
Make sure you have a Dumpster Rental from Pack-It-In Dumpsters Inc. available to purge all or most of your stuff before moving.
Sell, donate, and recycle what you can.
Get rid of the rest responsibly.
